Stefan wasn't about to let this go any longer. If only he had been there a few minutes earlier then he could have prevented this from happening. He was already feeling the weight of his guilt because he had been stupid not to have realized the depth of his feelings for Caroline. He still couldn't figure out when their friendship had turned into something more but it had.
It had taken Stefan long enough to realize that what he felt for Caroline was more than friendship, was it love? He didn't know but it was something. There was no words that Stefan could use to label it, but what was the point in doing that right now?
Caroline had flipped her humanity switch and was on the verge of going off the rails. Stefan knew what it was like to feel such pain that the only thing left to do was turn it all off. He had watched Elena go through it after Jeremy had died. He remembered her in those first few weeks after all of her emotions came hurling back. All the guilt for those innocent people that she murdered to make her point very clear that she didn't want to come back.
Stefan had been the one to help her focus on one emotion so that she was not overcome and attempted to flip the switch again. But Stefan felt like he owed this to Caroline, if only he had been honest with her when they spoke before the funeral. But he didn't, he was too much of a coward to admit how he really felt. He cared for Caroline in ways that he could not explain, it was something different from how he felt for Elena.
But after everything that had happened with Katherine and the Original family, Stefan had taken his eye off the ball and had not been there to prevent this. With Damon off doing his own thing, sensing that something was wrong with his older brother. But again Stefan knew that if Damon was keeping something from him it was nothing good. They both had their secrets, Stefan's secret that he had led his brother to believe that his had killed the child that their uncle Zack's girlfriend bore.
It was for the best, Stefan wanted Sarah kept away from all of this. She deserved to live a normal life without vampires present in her life. He did wonder what it would have been like if Caroline hadn't been turned into a vampire. Would he have still felt the same? Shaking his head and dismissing that thought entirely.
He made his way down the hall towards Caroline's dorm. Even though Elena had already told him that she wasn't there. But where else could they look? She had already cleared out her house and her dorm room, it looked like she nor Liz had ever existed. He had given his word to Liz that he would be there for Caroline and to help make her smile. He had broken that promise but he wasn't going to give up on her.
Stepping inside the room he looked over to the spot that Caroline had designated for herself and he was racked with overwhelming guilt. Frowning as he caught a glimpse of something behind the desk. Making his way over to it, he pulled the desk out and reached behind it and found a photo frame. Turning it over a soft smile spread across his face. He remembered when this photo had been taken. When times were so easy and before everything had gotten complicated. Before Klaus had shown up in Mystic Falls, when aunt Jenna had been alive.
All of that seemed like a life time ago and Stefan had lived several lives since he had been turned into a vampire, all thanks to Katherine. But hopefully with everyone who belonged in New Orleans remained there Stefan could focus all of his attention on bring Caroline back. Placing the frame on the desk as he took a last glance at it before he turned on his heels and left the dorm room.
He needed to find Caroline and he needed to help her come back. He wouldn't stop fighting until she had flipped her humanity back on.
