The sights and sounds were more than he ever expected from New Orleans. He and Tina who was his best friend and also his roommate had been planning this trip for years. She said it was time he experience something more than clubs, pounding music and Michigan men.
After his parents had kicked him out a few years back Tina and her family had taken him in before he got a job and they ended up getting their own place out of high school. A lot of people thought they were a couple which to him was just a little awkward and totally weird. Tina wasn't his type in more ways than one.
It was awesome that he and Tina could finally take this trip since they'd been talking about it for what seemed like a life time. A cab had picked them up at the airport and brought them to their French Quarter hotel, after unpacking their bags they shared a grin.
"Are you ready for this Josh? This one trip, it's going to change everything." Tina said beaming as if she knew something that he didn't which seemed unlikely.
"Well it can change everything, after I get some gumbo or a po'boy or something." His stomach growled out as he wrapped an arm around Tina before grabbing their room key. "So food, drinks and then we create these magic life changing events!"
He didn't believe that Tina was right about this trip changing everything but it was a nice change of pace. "You're always thinking with your stomach I'm not sure how you stay that size." They walked down the busy streets which seemed to get more congested the farther into the Quarter they got. Neither of them had a clue where they were going or if they could find their way back to the hotel but they were happy.
"We were on a plane for what seemed like forever and the last time we ate anything it was nine in the morning." And it was now about four in the afternoon. There was a boy who was probably eleven playing turned over five gallon buckets like drums.
Pulling up short he watched the kid and he had to admit he was good, like really good. Digging into his pocket he grabbed his wallet and pulled out a few dollars before tossing it into the tip like five gallon bucket. As he started walking again Tina elbowed him. "Don't spend your money on every street performer you see or we're never going to even get to eat before you're out of money."
Tina's words were harsh, like usual. It wasn't exactly what you would call an equal friendship since she was way more dominate than he was but he didn't mind. "Don't worry about it I'm not asking for your money Tina." Spotting what he was sure was one of the many cafe's in the Quarter he motioned towards it, "What do you think?"
Tina glanced inside before shrugging, "Why not?" Stepping inside it took a minute for his eyes to adjust to the dimmer light as he headed towards the counter while looking at the large menu posted on the wall behind the counter. "Not to sound...you know too tourist like but what would you suggest?"
Tina groaned and rolled her eyes but he wanted to get a suggestion from someone who actually worked here. "I'd suggest a half oyster po'boy and an order of red beans and rice or jambalaya." The older woman behind the counter seemed used to the question and already had an answer ready and he liked that.
"You know what. Just order me whatever you suggest I'm so hungry I might literally be able to eat a whole gator." The older woman laughed softly at him before giving him a total as he gave her cash. It seemed like a pretty small amount to pay and the smell coming from the kitchen was making his mouth water.
He wasn't sure what Tina ordered and honestly at this point he didn't care, that was double true as his food was dropped off on a tray right in front of him. "Thhhhank you!" He said picking up the po'boy and taking a bite before groaning. "This is so good." He mumbled through a mouthful of food as Tina sat down across from him.
"You are so easy to make happy. I can't imagine how you haven't found a stable guy." Tina's voice held a snarky tone and he knew she was rolling her eyes but at the moment he didn't care because he was taking it easy in the Big Easy.
