Sitting at a table at one of the small French Quarter cafes she couldn't help but think of the time spent in France with Matt, their little trip around the world. Seeing Davina so broken over the death of her first love had brought up painful memories for Rebekah, of countless lovers who had fallen at the hands of her brother. However she thought a lot about her first, of Lars and how broken she had been after her father had killed him. She understood the young witch on a level that she wasn't even sure Davina was aware of.
After first meeting Davina the girl had been nothing but an annoying and powerful witch who had pissed her the hell off by sending her out a window. Now she saw Davina for what she truly was, a girl with no one to trust, who had betrayed at a young age and infused with more power than anyone can hold, despite it all she was still innocent in many ways, just a teenage girl and she wanted what all teenage girls wanted, to be loved and love in return and Nik had taken that from her. Marcel was the only family Davina had, the newly turned vampire Josh her friend and though Rebekah said she wanted the city and needed Davina's help she didn't want New Orleans, she wanted the same things Davina did.
Sipping on her coffee she thought of the summer she'd spent with Matt, the places they'd visited, the stolen kisses and laughter, for the first time in over a thousand years she'd felt human. Marcel had never made her feel that way and she knew now that he never could. Even as a boy Marcel had wanted to be turned, to be one of them with the strength, speed and power to never be a victim again.
A man that left her daggered for a century was one she could never truly see a future with, he had made all these grand gestures over the centuries wanting them to be together but when it truly came down to it he had once again betrayed her for power. When her father came and she was forced to run Marcel had made a deal with Mikael to become ruler of the city and as she mourned his death he'd been building an empire.
Matt was everything she wanted to be, everything she wanted. He was honest, loyal, caring, considerate, compassionate and as she had said before so beautifully human. The fact that he saw himself as nothing special had always made her sad because to her he was the most amazing thing in the world. Matt risked his life for his friends knowing that if he died that was in fact the end and he always stood by them and she had envied Elena and Caroline of having him in their life.
It had been no secret that at the beginning Matt had truly disliked her for who and what she was and what she had done to him and his friends. Even though he had shown her kindness she'd hurt him regardless listening to her brother instead of her heart. As much as she wanted to be human Matt had been right she didn't know the first thing about humans anymore. Without realizing it she had fallen in love with the simple and yet extraordinary human which had drawn Nik's attention but his attraction to Caroline had stopped him from ever harming it.
It had taken so long to apologize and get Matt to listen to get him to see past what she was and what she had done but he saw her for what she wanted to be. He understood that she was doing the best that she could and that she did care about him even if she was afraid. Saving him from Alexander's trap had been the scariest and most human thing she'd even done but in that moment she knew she couldn't allow him to die.
Being in New Orleans she missed him dearly, she missed the simplicity of the summer and of her time with Matt. There were no witches or were-wolves trying to kill them nothing but the two of them enjoying one another and everything the world had to offer. When though she told him not to miss her too much she missed him with all her heart but she knew she could never be what he needed in life and that was what hurt the most.
She'd tried to visit him recently only to find out there was some boundary spell around Mystic Falls and given that they had distanced themselves so Matt could have a life so she hadn't called or tried to see him taking the spell as a sign. There was nothing Rebekah wanted more than for Matt to find everything he wanted in life and to get what a good man like him deserved. She wanted him to leave the small town of Mystic Falls and make something of himself because she knew that Matt could become so much more than he thought he could.
Finishing off her coffee she placed the cup down on the small saucer and left money on the table before leaving the cafe. Yes she understood Davina's pain but much like with Matt she hoped the girl's life would become easier and that she would meet another that she could love. That she would find a man that could truly handle her and bring out her best, Davina will still young so Rebekah had no doubt that someone was out there for the young witch even if the girl didn't believe it right now.
